Audiences were wowed by Zlatomir Fung’s extraordinary performance last March and this season he returns to join Gloria Chien for a concert featuring a stellar line-up of some of the most evocative works for cello and piano. Fung will open this program with his personal arrangement of Leoš Janáček’s masterful Czech opera Jenufa, showcasing his interpretation of the raw and often tragic human experience this opera portrays. Dubbed by French composer Eric Tanguy as “utterly unique in the entire literature of music for cello and piano”, Malinconia by Sibelius will follow. Closing the evening will be Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata in G minor, a quintessential piece of the Russian Romantic era that cements the cello as one of the most versatile instruments in chamber music.
